Bald
Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus On June 20, 1782, the U.S. Congress adopted the "American Eagle" our national emblem over the Wild Turkey. Many would wonder why considering the eagle eats carrion and can be found stealing fish from osprey. However, seeing the bird in flight would change people's opinion. Eagles are skilled hunters, able to capture waterfowl in flight and rabbits on the run. |

Golden
Eagle Aquila chrysaetos One of our largest raptors, the golden eagle feeds on marmots, jackrabbits, and prairie dogs. Adult birds have golden feathers streaking the head and immature birds are recognized by white wrist patches. The golden eagle is a consummate hunter, learning to take different kinds of prey using different tactics. It is a cosmopolitan species, occurring all over the world, and may be seen in western Nebraska. |
